Avoriaz is one of the highest and most snow-sure resorts in the Portes du Soleil, sitting at 1800 m directly above Morzine. It is entirely car-free — you arrive at the village entrance and travel on foot, ski or by horse-drawn sleigh — and the bold 1960s architecture blends modern lines with timber and stone to make a striking alpine setting. Because of its elevation Avoriaz has one of the best natural snow records in the Northern Alps and is the gateway to the high Portes du Soleil terrain. It is famous for advanced skiing including the fearsome Wall (Mur Suisse), the Stash snowboard park and some of the best off-piste in the Alps. Families are well catered for too — the children's village is one of the best in France — and the village has après-ski bars, shops and ski-in/ski-out accommodation throughout.

Avoriaz • Portes du Soleil

Avoriaz sits at the highest heart of the Portes du Soleil, with around 25 local lifts serving pistes that plunge from 2466 m down to the village. Advanced skiers come here for the famous Wall, the Arare off-piste sector, the Avoriaz Snowparks and the Stash wood-built freestyle park. The same lift pass unlocks the full Portes du Soleil — 600 km and 209 lifts across 12 resorts — and Avoriaz's altitude makes it the snow-sure hub of the whole domain.
