About St Jean d'Aulps

St Jean d'Aulps (often called Roc d'Enfer after the mountain that towers above it) is a quiet, authentic village at 900 m in the Abondance valley, a short drive from Morzine and Les Gets. It is one of the least-developed bases in the Portes du Soleil area, with excellent value accommodation, real local life and a beautifully preserved 12th-century abbey. The small Roc d'Enfer (La Grande Terche) ski area is a relaxed place for learning to ski and escapes the lift queues of the bigger resorts, while a short drive or ski-bus connects to the full Portes du Soleil. In summer the village lies on the regional Great Alpine crossing trail, with scenic walking, hayfields and traditional cheese farms. St Jean d'Aulps is the choice for a genuine low-key French alpine stay while still being within easy reach of the largest ski domain in the world.
